File of Life

File of Life Sample Sticker

The File of Life program is an initiative that assists EMS personnel when they respond to an emergency.  This program uses clear plastic, magnetized envelopes to store pertinent medical information in plain view on refrigerator doors. The magnetized holders contain a standard medical form on which the homeowners record medical history, medications, etc.

History of the Program

Previously this program was known as the Vial of Life. The idea was to place valuable medical information on paper and in a location that everyone had in their home. The "vial" was nothing more than a prescription vial which held the medical paperwork and the standard location was deemed to be the freezer compartment of refrigerators. This program was in place for a few years in Novi but there were some flaws, one of which was that many times the vial would be lost in the freezer section among the frozen foods.

Based on this flaw and other problems a new program began a few years ago. Currently the Novi Fire Department has used up all of the old style vials and begun the new program called the File of Life. The new program uses clear plastic envelopes to store pertinent medical information in plain view on refrigerator doors. The magnetized holders contain a standard medical form on which the homeowners record medical history, medications, etc. EMS personnel automatically check refrigerator doors when a homeowner is unconscious or unable to communicate with first responders.

Senior Couple standing outside their homeEach year, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, nearly one million people over age 65 are treated in hospital emergency rooms for injuries associated with the products they live with and use everyday. The death rate from unintentional injuries in the home is approximately three times greater for older people than for the younger population. Seniors may not realize their home is no longer safe and presents dangers to which they are unaware.

In an effort to better protect and prepare our older adults, the Novi Fire Department is excited to announce a new program aimed at reducing the threat of injury and fire to Novi’s residents. The Fire and Fall Prevention for Older Adults Program is designed to educate residents of the hazards within their own homes that could cause harm by leading to a fire or causing injury.

Slips and falls are the main source of injury for older people in the home. Fire Department Inspection team members may recommend the use of grab-bars and non-slip mats in the bathtub, handrails on both sides of the stairs, and slip-resistant carpets and rugs. Recognizing burns occur from hot tap water and from open flame, the inspection team may recommend consumers turn down the temperature of their water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit to help prevent scalds. They will also check to in ensure the proper installation and maintenance of at least one smoke detector on every floor of the home.

Items on the inspection checklist include:

  • Electrical hazards
  • Fire hazards
  • Missing or inoperative CO & smoke detectors
  • “Trip and fall” hazards
  • Defective stairs and rails
  • Improper hot water temperature

The Fire and Fall Prevention Program will be delivered to Novi residents through both group presentations at local and by making in-home visits upon their request. Novi residents can request an in-home visit by the Novi Fire Department for a safety inspection by calling the Novi Fire Department at 248-735-5673.

Fee: $200

The Novi Fire Department offers fire extinguisher training for businesses, organizations, institutions, and community groups (minimum of 10 participants) to help participants understand fire prevention principles and the safe, effective use of portable fire extinguishers. Training includes instruction on fire classifications, extinguisher types, emergency decision-making, and hands-on practice when appropriate.

Annual and Biannual Fire Inspections

Fee: $158

The Novi Fire Department conducts annual fire inspections of commercial businesses, multi-family residential occupancies, schools, healthcare facilities, and other regulated properties to help ensure compliance with the adopted fire code and to reduce the risk of fire and life safety hazards. During these inspections, fire personnel evaluate fire protection systems, means of egress, emergency planning, hazardous materials storage, and other safety features designed to protect occupants, employees, customers, and first responders.

Re-Inspections and Fire Code Violation Follow-Up Inspections

Fee: $75

When violations are identified during an annual inspection, biannual inspection, complaint investigation, or referral to the Fire Marshal's Office, the Novi Fire Department conducts follow-up re-inspections to verify that the deficiencies have been corrected and that the property is in compliance with applicable fire and life safety codes. These re-inspections help ensure that identified hazards are addressed in a timely manner and that occupants, employees, visitors, and emergency responders remain protected.

Hourly Fee

Fee: $80

The Novi Fire Department provides a variety of inspection, consultation, and code compliance services that fall outside the scope of routine annual and re-inspections. These services may include fire code consultations, plan reviews, operational permit inspections, special event inspections, fire protection system evaluations, occupancy change reviews, complaint investigations, and other requests that require Fire Marshal or fire prevention staff involvement.

Because the time and complexity of these services can vary significantly, they may be billed on an hourly basis. The hourly fee helps recover the costs associated with personnel time, technical expertise, research, travel, documentation, and administrative processing required to complete these specialized services.

Fee: $25

The Novi Fire Department conducts annual inspections of food trucks and mobile food preparation vehicles operating within the City of Novi to ensure compliance with applicable fire and life safety codes. These inspections focus on cooking equipment, fuel systems, fire extinguishers, fire suppression systems, emergency shutoffs, electrical components, and other safety features designed to reduce the risk of fire and protect employees, customers, and the public.

The Novi Fire Department will provide a free courtesy Home Safety Inspection. Inspections provide an opportunity to educate the home owner or occupants about fire safe behavior and the need for adequate fire and life safety conditions inside and outside of the residence. The inspection will check each area of your home and offer fire safety tips and suggestions to safe guard your family from the threat of fire or other potential hazards.

The inspection typically lasts between 20-30 minutes. At the conclusion of the inspection a copy of the findings will be given to the resident along with suggestions and recommendations on how to correct any hazard found during the inspection.

This program is strictly voluntary, but if you participate there are many benefits to you and your family. The Novi Fire Department simply wishes to assist you in making your home fire safe and hazard free. To schedule an appointment, please contact the Novi Fire Department Shift Supervisor at 248-735-5673.

A Note About Smoke Detectors

The Novi Fire Department wants to remind the community when they change their clocks, make a change that could save lives - change the batteries in all smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

Here are some tips to reduce your chances of being a fire victim:

  • Replace smoke detectors every 10 years.
  • Test smoke detectors monthly.
  • Make sure detectors can be heard throughout the home.  Install additional alarms if needed per manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Have an escape plan. Have at least two ways out of every room, making sure that all doors and windows can be opened without a key or special effort. Have a meeting place outside, and when you are out…stay out!

“The Novi Fire Department would like to help residents who can’t afford to purchase smoke detectors or those in need of assistance with installing or testing smoke detectors,” notes Erick Zinser, Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police. “Working together, we can ensure that every resident is protected.

  • The Fire Department provides battery-operated smoke detectors only.
  • If the resident buys the hard-wired detectors, the plugs MUST be the same for each or have an adapter to plug into each plug, unplug old and plug in new.  The Fire Department will not cut or splice any wires. Resident MUST get an electrician to install detectors.
  • The Fire Department will not disassemble furniture to install a smoke detector.

To schedule an appointment, please contact the Novi Fire Department Shift Supervisor at 248-735-5673.

Partnership in Excellence Program

Parntership in ExcellenceThe Novi Fire Department partners with Providence Hospital and the Novi High School to educate young adults about medical careers. Novi High School students receive a presentation twice a year, fall and spring about the value of medical education to emergency responders by the departments Training Officer. Students are provided a tour of the Novi Fire Department EMS units. The Novi Fire Department has participated with Novi High School and Providence Hospital in the “Partnership in Excellence” program since 2007.  Several students have expressed interest about a career in the Fire Department. This gives the students a great opportunity to ask questions about pre-hospital careers that are available to them in the health field.
