Program Introduction & Mission Statement
TOPSoccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer) is a community-based training and team-placement program for young athletes with disabilities. The program is designed to bring the opportunity of learning and playing soccer to any boy or girl, ages 5 to 19, who has a mental or physical disability. Our goal is to enable local athletes with special needs to develop their physical fitness, technical skills, and self-esteem in a safe, fun, and supportive environment. TOPSoccer is an officially recognized program within both US Youth Soccer and the Michigan State Youth Soccer Association (MSYSA).
Player Registration & Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- There are three key people in a TOPSoccer session:
- Coach – leads activities
- Player – child with special needs
- Buddy – the person who assists the Player with activities as needed
- The players come to sessions led by coaches where they work on different soccer skills in a positive and safe environment. The player with disabilities is paired with a buddy who will assist them in following the directions of the coach who is leading the session. Abilities of the players vary widely, and drills are modified to match their skills. Activities are paced to accommodate the players and the emphasis is always on positive reinforcement and encouragement.
- All that is required to participate as a player is to click on the registration link to sign up and show up.
- Due to the generosity of our sponsors and generous donors, the session will be conducted FREE OF CHARGE to the players. Each player will be provided with a jersey. Players need to provide their own footwear and socks.

Volunteer Buddy Recruitment & Intake
- WE NEED YOUR HELP!
- Volunteer Buddies
- TOPSoccer Buddies are invaluable volunteers who participate directly with individual players or in a team setting to enable full participation in soccer activities. The buddies help our players succeed, stay engaged, and remain safe. A Buddy can be a same-aged peer, a teenager, or an adult. You do not have to be a soccer player or have any prior soccer experience to volunteer. We welcome any individual who is patient, enthusiastic, and eager to give back to the special needs community.
- For high school students, this program offers a consistent opportunity to collect verified community service hours while making a tangible local impact.
- The role of a buddy includes:
- Interacting dynamically with players, coaches, and parents.
- Providing on-field physical or directional assistance as needed.
- Assisting players in getting into position to play and maintaining focus.
- Directing the ball to the player to maximize touches and engagement.
