This project is complete.
Statement of Intent
Per the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE), homes built prior to 1989 are considered at risk for containing lead water service lines (LSLs). Although the City of Novi believes no LSLs exist in the City, we are required to complete a Distribution System Material Inventory (DSMI). This inventory involves randomly selecting a subset of the pre-1989 homes to physically inspect the pipe materials. The inspection process includes two steps – 1) observing the pipe material inside the home at the water meter, and 2) digging up the area around the water shutoff valve (typically in the front yard) to inspect the pipe material on either side of the valve. The City will be inspecting approximately 370 homes in this manner.
DSMI
The purpose of a DSMI is to characterize, record, and maintain a comprehensive inventory of distribution system materials, including service line materials on both public and private property.
Inspections
OHM Advisors, the City’s engineering consultant, assisted with the inspections. OHM personnel were authorized to contact residents, and to performed the internal home inspection at the water meter. All OHM personnel wore clothing with their logo. The Water and Sewer Division can be contacted with any questions or concerns about the inspections.
