9/26/25: 3:45pm

Novi, you continue to amaze us with your patience and support as GLWA works through this major water main break. THANK YOU for your understanding and cooperation.

We have a few important updates:

🔷 Boil Water Advisory - All those in the highlighted peach area on the map remain on a BOIL WATER ADVISORY until further notice.

đź”· Water Usage - We cannot say this strongly enough, it is imperative that all residents and businesses turn off irrigation systems and refrain from outdoor water use throughout the duration of the repair. We are operating on a temporary 24-inch bypass line in place of the 42-inch main that typically serves our community. This system is stable but limited, and reducing unnecessary demand is critical to keeping water flowing for essential needs.

🔷 Water Quality Testing - While water service was restored this morning, the work is not finished yet and will most likely take several weeks for a full repair. GLWA crews only just completed isolating the broken main this afternoon, and now our Novi team must flush the entire water system before any water quality testing can begin.
🔷 Once flushing is complete, GLWA will collect samples. By state regulations, we must receive two consecutive clean samples taken 24 hours apart before the Boil Water Advisory can be lifted. Based on this timeline, the advisory could remain in place until Wednesday.
🔷 Road Closure – At this time, 14 Mile Road, between Welch Road and M5 remains closed to through traffic.
We know all of this is inconvenient, and we thank you for your continued patience and cooperation. Your understanding allows our crews and GLWA to do the work necessary to ensure Novi’s water is fully safe and reliable.

If you have any questions or require assistance, please email us at communityrelations@cityofnovi.org.

9/26/25: 7:52am

GLWA has successfully isolated the break, and you should now be experiencing improved water pressure (though it may not yet be at full strength and could fluctuate due to the demand on the system, especially this morning).

A few important reminders:

🔷 All residents and businesses in the peach area of the map remain under a Boil Water Advisory. For information about a Boil Water Advisory, visit https://www.oakgov.com/.../drinkin.../boil-water-information

đź”· An outdoor water use restriction is in place. Please turn off irrigation systems to help reduce demand.

🔷 The system is stable, but it’s a good idea to fill your bathtub or other containers with water as a backup supply in case service is interrupted again.

Our City team will be meeting with GLWA field crews later this morning, and we’ll provide another update afterward.

🚨Water Main Break Update 🚨
9/25/25: 5:45pm

Our Novi team met again late this afternoon with GLWA. Crews have successfully shut 6 of the 7 valves needed to isolate the break and will continue working through the evening and overnight. Once complete, they will pressurize an alternate delivery system.

🚧Traffic Alert: Fourteen Mile Road remains closed to through traffic between Welch Rd. and M-5 until further notice.

đź’§Important Reminder: If your water is back on Friday morning, please know a BOIL WATER ADVISORY is in effect until further notice for all impacted areas (see map below).

GLWA field crews continue working to isolate the water main break. Out of seven valves that need to be closed, four have already been successfully shut. Crews will keep working this afternoon, evening, and into the night if necessary to finish closing the valves and pressurize another delivery system.

  • For flushing toilets only.
  • DO NOT use for drinking or bathing.

9/25/25: 12pm
The Great Lakes Water Authority is working to isolate water main valves and restore the community's water supply as quickly as possible. Impacted communities include Novi, Wixom, Commerce Township and Walled Lake.
We would like all residents, in the affected area, to temporarily refrain from lawn irrigation, and limit non-essential water use, when water pressure is re-established

Civic Center Closed
  • The Civic Center is temporarily closed to public entry.
  • The City Clerk's Office will remain open to assist voters with Absentee Ballots. If you are looking to obtain an Absentee Ballot, please call the City Clerk's Office at 248-347-0456 and a staff member will assist you.

9/25/25, 11:22am
GLWA just held a meeting with the City of Novi and surrounding communities. They are still working on isolating and repairing the water main break.

9/25/25, 8:05am
Earlier this morning, GLWA experienced a break in a 42-inch transmission main on 14 Mile Road, just west of M-5. This break has caused much of Novi to lose water pressure. Field Service crews are on-site working to isolate the break. Given the size of the main, this process is expected to take several hours before water service can be restored to those impacted (see map below).

Once service is restored, all affected areas will be under a boil water advisory. We will continue to share updates as more information becomes available.

What should you do?

  • ALL residents and businesses in the peach area in the above map are impacted (except those on a well).
  • Do NOT drink the water without boiling it first. Let it boil for one (1) minute and let it cool before using.
  • Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation.
  • Filtered water is NOT safe for use as the organisms are microscopic. Boil ALL water used for consumption.
  • Water can be used for showering, baths, and shaving, but do not swallow water or allow it to get in your eyes, nose, or mouth. Supervise children and disabled individuals during their bath to make sure water is not swallowed. Minimize bathing time.
  • Avoid using irrigation systems.
  • If you are on a well, you are not impacted by this Advisory.
  • General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1.800.426.4791.
  • Our community partners at the Oakland County Health Department provide valuable information regarding what to do during a Boil Water Advisory on their website at oakgov.com.

How long will the Boil Water Advisory last?

Once water service is restored, we will begin testing multiple locations of the Novi water system. We must receive two negative tests, 24 hours apart to lift the Advisory.
