GLWA 54-Inch Water Main Loop

Updated: 9/6/2024

Start: February 21, 2022
Current Status: Complete
End: August 30, 2024
Road Jurisdiction: Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA)

PROJECT STATUS:

13 Mile Road (M-5 to Meadowbrook) - 13 Mile Road is fully reopened to two-way traffic. All that remains is some minor punch list work which shouldn't impact traffic.

Meadowbrook (12 to 13 Mile) - This segment is open to two-way traffic. There are still some existing structures in the roadway that need adjusting along with water testing of the new 54-inch water main, but those will be isolated to those discrete locations.

Meadowbrook (I-96 to 12 Mile) - This portion of Meadowbrook Road was fully reopened. But, there are several pavement related punch list items to rework in the coming weeks.

Meadowbrook (11 Mile to I-96) - This portion of the roadway is complete. There may be some intermittent lane closures for punch list work.

11 Mile (Meadowbrook to Seeley) - This portion of the roadway is complete. There may be some intermittent lane closures for punch list work.

8 Mile Road, between Haggerty Road and I-275 – This portion of 8 Mile Rd. is open.

DESCRIPTION
This is a Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) project involving the construction of a 54-inch transmission water main to interconnect two existing GLWA transmission mains at 14 Mile and 8 Mile Roads.

The project was initiated in response to a pipe failure in October 2017 that greatly impacted Novi, Farmington Hills, West Bloomfield, Commerce, Walled Lake, and Wixom communities. This new main will provide redundancies and improved operational flexibility for routine maintenance or emergencies.

Phase 1 began under a different contract in late 2020 to extend an existing 24-inch transmission main along 14 Mile Road, between M-5 and Decker/Novi Roads.

This Phase 2 project was bid out publicly and GLWA awarded $98 Million to the Joint Venture team of Ric-Man Construction and Clark Construction. As an added benefit, the City (through a cost share agreement with GLWA) will reconstruct four (4) road segments: 11 Mile Road from Seeley to Meadowbrook; Meadowbrook Road from 11 Mile to 12 Mile; Meadowbrook Road from 12 Mile to 13 Mile; and 13 Mile Road from Meadowbrook to M-5.
